While desmoid tumors can occur anywhere in the body's soft tissues, it's important to consult with a soft tissue cancer (sarcoma) specialist who has experience with desmoid tumors. These specialists are best equipped to recommend the most appropriate treatment plan based on current research and expertise.

Surgery is no longer considered the standard first-line treatment for desmoid tumors since these tumors often tend to return after surgical removal. However, surgery may still be recommended in specific cases, particularly if the tumor is causing significant symptoms or pressing on vital organs. If surgery is determined to be necessary, your surgical team will remove the tumor along with a margin of healthy tissue to help reduce the risk of recurrence. Sometimes, radiation therapy may be combined with surgery - either before to shrink the tumor and make surgery easier, or after to prevent recurrence.

Recovery time varies depending on the tumor's size, location, and the complexity of the surgery. You may need to stay in the hospital for several days, and pain management medications will be provided to help with post-surgical discomfort.
