That's a really important question. Desmoid tumors of the abdominal wall grow in the connective tissue surrounding the stomach and intestines β essentially in the layers just beneath the skin. While they can grow and cause significant discomfort, skin erosion is not a commonly reported characteristic of desmoid tumors.
Desmoid tumors are known for being locally aggressive, meaning they can grow into surrounding tissues, but they do not typically behave in ways that cause them to break through the skin surface. That said, every situation is unique. If there are any changes in the skin over or around the tumor β such as redness, breakdown, or ulceration β it's really important to bring this to a desmoid tumor specialist's attention right away.
A specialist, ideally through a multidisciplinary tumor board, can best assess what's happening and recommend the most appropriate next steps for that specific situation.

Yes it can. My interabdominal Desmoid which abscessed and blew through the abdominal wall in 2021 started spreading and invaded my skin. Unfortunately I have to wear an ostomy pouch and the invading tissue is where the pouch has to go. Very uncomfortable from time to time π
