Are desmoid tumors similar to fibroid tumors?

Desmoid tumors are actually a type of fibromatosis, not fibroid tumors. While the names sound similar, they're different conditions.

Desmoid tumors are also called desmoid-type fibromatosis or aggressive fibromatosis. They're noncancerous growths that form in connective tissue throughout the body, including the abdomen, arms, legs, and chest.

The term "desmoid" comes from the Greek word "desmos," meaning "tendonlike," because these tumors look like tendons that connect muscles to bone.

Unlike typical fibroids (which usually refer to uterine fibroids), desmoid tumors are classified as "deep fibromatosis" and can grow aggressively into nearby tissues, though they don't spread to distant parts of the body.

Key characteristics of desmoid tumors include:
- Made of tough, fibrous connective tissue
- Can appear anywhere in the body
- Locally aggressive but don't metastasize
- More common in young adults aged 20 to 30

While both conditions involve abnormal tissue growth, desmoid tumors have unique behaviors and treatment approaches that differ from other types of fibromas.
